If your membership application is accepted, you will become the Network
Director for a large area. Most Directors charge their members fees
around $1000 per year. (We will forward the names of
therapists interested in joining your network.) The fees from 5 or 6
members will enable you to place effective advertising, receive a great
number of referrals and develop a profitable organization usually in the
first year. You will receive another benefit in that the Network will
forward referrals from other Directors who need a therapist in your
area. Additionally, you will benefit from recognition received by the
international 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK.

something you have to see and hear it over and over again. This can be very
expensive to accomplish. The advantage of having an easily remembered phone
number is that less repeat advertising is needed to get your point across. Once

5. Who is in charge of the Network?
Each "Network
Director" is in charge of his or her own territory, but the entire
1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK AND MARKETING SERVICE is headed by Dr.
Kevin Grold.
He has over 15 years experience directing the Congressionally awarded Mental
Health Referral Service of Southern California and he has been in charge of
1-800-therapist.com since 1994. He has been quoted
in the London Times, the Los Angeles Times, People Magazine, the National
Psychologist, the California Psychologist, the Psychiatric Times, Practice
Management Monthly, Headline News, and he has been quoted several times in Dear
Abby's column. He will be directly involved in helping you develop your local,
successful business.
6. Do I have to install a new phone and a new phone line?
No, but you will have to change your outgoing message so that when potential
clients call 1-800-THERAPIST, they know that they have reached the correct
office. You may consider obtaining a voice-mail system with a pager if you are
not available to answer the phones directly.
7. Is it ethical to run a referral service?
Yes. Many professional organizations have developed referral services. The
ethical and legal aspects of this Network have been carefully scrutinized by
respected attorneys over the past 20 years. If you have any concerns, we are
more than happy to discuss them with you.
8. Am I required to continue my membership?
You only make a commitment for one year. Your renewal fee
is based on
the number of calls received (as stated on your contract).
9. What are the requirements to join?
You
must have a degree in the mental health field and a valid license in the mental
health field. The application process includes signing a declaration stating that you have
no pending professional or legal complaints pending against you, providing evidence
of a valid license & current malpractice insurance, and agreeing to be
responsible for the referrals and advertising (other requirements are stated on
the contract). If your application is rejected
or your area code is unavailable, the entire membership fee and all materials will be returned.
10. How will new clients know to call the 1-800-THERAPIST number?
You will be able to advertise the 1- 800-THERAPIST number locally utilizing
well-tested professional advice. Through our initial "Referral Service
Development Book," you will learn about a variety of
business-building ideas which have
proven effective over many years of experience in a variety of different
settings. At the same time the 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK is promoting the
number on a much larger scale. Both of us working together creates a
powerful, positive and creative energy. (There is no way to and we cannot guarantee future calls or
referrals.)
11. How do I find therapists to join my Network?
Once you have locked in your area code, therapists interested in your area
will be referred to you to help form your network. Additionally, we
will help you with a variety of ideas to build your network. Many Network
Directors have told us that they were surprised how easy it was to get
therapists to join! There is an excitement when therapists are working
with clients that fit with their interests and specialties. Most
therapists don't want to promote their business, so membership in the
1-800-THERAPIST Network removes that pressure and allows these therapists to
focus on being the best clinicians they can be.
12. What about Managed Care?
We believe that the 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK is the best way to remain in private
practice in this era of Managed Care. In order to maintain
a healthy private practice you want as many referrals
as possible coming to your office. Let us explain how we are actually receiving
many private therapy referrals from Managed Care organizations.
13. Is this similar to a Pyramid Scheme or Network Level Marketing?
A pyramid scheme is an illegal scheme to make money off
people and give
them nothing in return. It is designed so that the people at the top make money
and the people at the bottom get nothing. As the levels of membership grow
deeper, the members at the top make more money. When no one at the bottom is
left to
sign up, those people end up losing their membership money. A
distinctive sign of a Pyramid Scheme is that nothing exchanged is of
value.
The 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK is set up with only 2 "levels." The
international and the local level. This is just like any other organization
such as the APA and their local state and county chapters. The local
"Network Directors" benefit from the referrals and the membership fees but the members
also benefit from referrals and they do not have to do their own advertising.
The local members do not attempt to get other members to join and thus there
cannot be any sort of a pyramid forming.
I hope this explains the difference between an illegal Pyramid Scheme and an
international organization trying to provide service on a level that is helpful to
local communities. We pride ourselves on our reputation and believe that it is
important to provide service with the highest of standards.
14. How valuable is each 1-800-THERAPIST
referral?
When a client comes in for the first time,
passing through your door is a potential lifetime of business. Consider
that one client paying $80 a week for a year can increase your income by $4160. If this client refers 2 new
clients to you and they in turn each refer 1 client, then after a year,
your income can increase by a total of $20,800 just because of that first
referral. This won't happen with all clients, but some will show up at
your office who CAN afford your fees, who WILL come to see you for many
years, and who WILL refer their spouse, children, and friends. In a

15. What are the costs involved in joining the Network?
Your membership fee is $1000 for the first year
( Call
for rates outside the US).
Also you will be billed for the incoming calls. This is a very small cost to
have your own easily recognized 800 number and a year's worth of marketing
assistance and consultation. Psychotherapy Finances quotes the average fee
of a marketing consultant to be between $1000-$1250
per day (travel expenses are
additional). There is no charge for additional personal marketing assistance.

Also, your application fee is tax deductible as a business expense.
What are you currently paying to market and advertise your practice? ...Why
not have those expenses paid by your Network members? If $1000 to
start a new business sounds like a lot of money, then you probably do not
realize what it usually takes to start a business. Do a search for
"franchises" on the Internet and see if there are any businesses you
can start for under
$100,000.

understand clearly the value of what we are offering and usually have some
business background. These are the therapists who do very well as Network
Directors. You do not need to have a background in business to put a
referral network together though...an entrepreneurial spirit will do--because we
help you with every aspect of business development.
16. Can I reserve my area code?
Applications are considered which meet our high standards of
professionalism. When several applicants have equal merits, then the
applications are examined on a first-come, first-served basis.

may be able to match you with callers while you are considering applying.

What surprises might I find?
We
do our best to make sure there are no surprises. We have removed all
the "legalese" from our contract so that it is very clear and
straightforward. We have also presented all the membership costs in
question #15 above. The only surprise we find comes from therapists
when they do not realize that there were other therapists considering the
same area code. When someone takes a long time to consider joining
and then sends in their application, they are often surprised when we have
to return the entire application due to the fact that another licensed
therapist was approved first. When the rare area code becomes
available, we make sure there many therapists considering the one opening in
order to quickly fill the location and return to helping callers with a
local resource person.
18. What is the next step if I am
interested in applying?
Find out if your area code is available. You can do this by
requesting an application. If we send you an application, then the area is
still open.
If we ask you to contact your local
Network Director, then you can still join our group but not as a Director
of a Network, but as a member receiving referrals. If you would
prefer to run a referral network, ask to be included on our waiting list and
ask if any nearby area codes are still open.
