Wellbutrin XL is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with a certain type of depression called major depressive disorder and for prevention of autumn-winter seasonal depression (seasonal affective disorder).
Wellbutrin XL is also used to treat the following:
- Anxiety
- Smoking cessation
- Sexual dysfunction
- Obesity
- Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
Along with other psychostimulants such as Methylphenidate (Ritalin), Wellbutrin XL has been trialed for potential pharmacotherapy for cocaine and methamphetamine abuse in humans, in a similar way that methadone and bupernorphine are used to treat opioid, i.e. heroin, addiction. At a dose of 150 mg withdrawal symptoms in one case of amphetamine abuse disappeared within 2 to 3 days of taking Wellbutrin XL.
According to several case studies and a pilot study, Wellbutrin XL lowers the level of an inflammatory mediator TNF-alpha and may be useful in autoinflammatory conditions such as Crohn's disease and psoriasis.
