We have no idea what will happen and we invite you to watch from home on your personal computer. The 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK has brought together the elements of a therapeutic interaction so that the public can see for itself what actually goes on in a counseling session.
Like most people, you may be unsure what REALLY happens in counseling. The media has portrayed counseling in a negative light and those who go to counseling as crazy. For examples consider all the way back to Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Richard Dreyfus in What about BOB?, the Dr. Katz cartoon on Comedy Central, or more recently with Tracy Ullman's character on Ally McBeal. The psychiatrists on the popular TV series Frasier have yet to treat an emotional problem in a serious manner. The public has learned to fear the ridicule associated with asking for help with their mental health problems to the point where now only 1 in 5 Americans with a mental disorder seeks out help.
Why are we doing this? We are doing this to change the public's view of real mental health counseling. We are committed to reducing the fear and increasing the acceptance associated with asking for help with mental health problems. The 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK is the leader in the mental health field with the creation of several tools to help remove the stigma often associated with asking for help with mental health issues. Our goal is for everyone to be able to say, "I am in counseling" without feeling embarrassed. What is the ONLINE COUNSELING EXPERIENCE? NOW for the first time anywhere, the public can see for itself what actually goes on behind closed doors. A client will be chosen from among applicants on the Internet. A Scholarship program has been set up to pay for 5 sessions of counseling. With future donations, more counseling sessions can be set up. This COUNSELING EVENT will start on February 7th at 6 pm Pacific time. The only software necessary is a Real Video player which is available at http://www.real.com and at least a 28.8 modem to see the video. A chat room is provided for licensed therapists to give their thoughts on improving future counseling sessions. Questions: Who pays for the counseling? The first 5 sessions will be paid through a unique COUNSELING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. After that, the client and the therapist will have to work out terms. Our plan is to have the first 5 sessions on the Internet and then continuing counseling in private with the therapist. After 5 sessions we will have a new client and a new therapist on the Internet. How does someone apply for the Counseling Scholarship? You must live within driving distance of north county San Diego and email referralhelp@1-800-therapist for an application.How does a therapist qualify to be on the 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK? Is the Internet session the client's first session? Yes. The client will fill out background information following the suggestions in the articles on the 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK home page. Then the client and the therapist will meet for the first time live. Not every client will work well with every therapist. So just as in a real counseling session, this will have to be evaluated by the therapist and the client in their first session. What is the background of the therapist who will be doing the live counseling?--How was he or she chosen? He or she will be chosen from among the 1-800-THERAPIST members in San Diego. Future counseling sessions will come from other locations across North America. Click on the picture of Freud above to learn more about the current therapist. How will the client's needs be tended to with this ground breaking experiment? Briefly--The client volunteer understands that he or she can leave or cancel the counseling session at any time. The client is under no obligation to continue with the counseling process. The client understands that he or she may choose to stop at any time the LIVE aspect of the counseling session for either a temporary period, or indefinitely without any penalty (as can the therapist). If the client decides to stop the live aspect of the counseling, he or she will still receive the remaining portion of that session and the total of 5 sessions in private without any penalty. Our policy is that we do not accept any direct emails for the client (supportive or otherwise). (These are just some of the safeguards in place to protect the client.)
